Spring and Printing

Begining of February and it is so mild I keep thinking we are much further on in the year. Worried about the flowers popping out so early.

Last month, I began my 10 weeks printing course. We started with monoprints and when it came to the coloured ones I liked the colours flowing over each other so much, I printed that alone.

We progressed to collographs and had to do designs and experiment with textures and layers. My first was out of my head (not always a good idea with me) and I had to force myself to try new things because I really wanted

a nice print and not to risk things too much. The second one I based on a drawing I had made years ago when visiting our daughter in Melbourne. It had a tree with many leaves. As I sat cutting and gluing down little fiddly bits of paper I though ‘this is not for me’
However……..

The next week we printed and wow! We used wet paper and a modern press to so relief and then dry paper and the most wonderful old press for intaglio. So smooth and simple. My intaglio was not good as I rubbed off too much ink. But it is all learning.

I also printed onto fabric. This had to be wet with wet paper too.

Now I am trying to learn how to cut vinyl which I have chosen in preference to lino. It is diffucult trying to work inreverse for the light and dark areas.

Meanwhile, I continue with my African pieces for the Travellers’ Tales exhibition.

New Year New Work

I would like to start this process by saying good bye to my ‘Timeless Moon Over Ferns’ piece. As I have said elsewhere, it took me a year to create, working under very difficult conditions as our ‘new’ house was being renovated. However, if you look at it another way, perhaps it kept me sane. I was delighted to have it accepted as part of the South West Textiles Group’s exhibition at the Museum of Somerset in Taunton. The exhibition looked superb and I was pleased (and sad) to sell the piece.
Next exhibition title is Travellers’ Tales and after several ideas I am going to work on an African theme using strips of African fabric as a base.

Gosh who would buy an Iranian carpet on the spur of the moment in Toronto? Us, ofcourse, and it is so wonderful. Woven then embroidered in the most beautiful colours.

At last I have had the opportunity to see our SWTG exhibition at the Taunton Museum and it is fab. Every piece is a wonder. Thought provoking but beautiful at the same time. The museum have hung it sensitively and with great skill. I am delighted.

Picos de Europa

Thank you for Birthday wishes. What a place to celebrate a birthday. The amazing stony high peaks outside my window, soaring up into the blue and the cloud. Reminds me of a theme from long ago. Busy taking photos.
